Often people come to me and express frustration with the people in their lives. Someone came and told me the other day, “My partner is so needy and it’s driving me up the wall!” In my thinking, what a great blessing to have a person like that around you. Why? It’s an opportunity to practice!
What options do you have in those moments when you feel challenged by another’s need for attention? You can contract your heart and push the person away. Another option is to expand your heart and give a part of yourself. Whenever you do that, you are working on the expansion of yourself. You are making yourself greater than you were before. Whenever you give part of yourself to the other person with this understanding, you yourself grow.
The more you give of yourself the more you grow. This inner expansion is the true wealth. It is the most valuable aspect of human life.
Whenever we open our hearts and give a piece of ourselves that is sweet, nurturing, and nourishing to another, we elevate ourselves into a higher state of being. We bring peace into our own hearts and into our surroundings.
We all have this capacity. Basically all that people are really looking for is to have a little space in another’s heart. It may come in many disguises, that need might express itself in different ways, but at its essence, people are looking for that connection.
Whenever there is that union and fusion, a tremendous amount of energy is created. In this state there is harmony and peace. The energy is nurturing and expansive. In our world there is also the energy of splitting – energy that is destructive in its nature. Whenever we take actions that separate ourselves from another person, the energy that is created is destructive. It not only destroys our peace, our home and our environment, but it also destroys our community, our society and ourselves as well.
May we all keep striving to cultivate that energy of harmony and unity. It is that energy that holds this world together.
Each one of us has this responsibility in the world. We are not only responsible for ourselves and our homes. We are also responsible in a much greater way.
Peace is an action, an inner action. When you are at peace, peace is created in the world. Whenever that happens in your heart and in your relationships, those ripples emanate from your body and touch everything around you. It may seem insignificant, but whenever you are working on creating peace, it affects the whole universe.
